Moss, Algae & Lichen Removal

Moss, Algae and Lichen on the roof is a common problem that more often affects the more porous roof tiles, especially concrete. Lower gradient roofs are particularly prone as the poor run-off allows moisture to remain on the roof surface for longer, harbouring the ideal conditions for the Moss to take hold. North facing roofs suffer from reduced daylight exposure which can also contribute to Moss growth.

We attempt to remove all Moss, Algae and Lichen deposits by hand and restrict the use of pressure washing to very dense areas or where it becomes a practical necessity. Keeping pressure washing to an absolute minimum protects the integrity of your roof structure, especially where skylights, Solar panels and Dormer windows are installed. Once the deposits have been completely removed, a herbicidal sealing agent is applied which prevents the Moss from taking hold and speeds the repel of water from the tile surface preventing the creation of the conditions ideal for Moss, algae and Lichen growth. Tile paint may then be applied to further protect and enhance the beauty of the cleaned tiles.

We also recommend increasing natural light to the roof as Moss thrives in dark damp conditions, so if your roof is sheltered by overhanging branches and foliage, it's advisable to have surrounding trees trimmed back, so that more natural light falls on the roof during the daytime.
