What is Single Ply Roofing?

Single Ply roof covering systems as the name suggests, use a single membrane covering to provide a weather proof barrier. The popularity of single ply membranes has increased over the years due to it's durability, appearance and ease of installation on a variety of roof types.

The performance, flexibility and aesthetic appearance of these membranes, coupled with the availability of preformed products such as corners, are making single ply membranes increasingly popular. Modern and light weight, single ply is much quicker to install than traditional coverings and is particularly suitable for weaker structures.

Offering a potential duration in excess of 50 years, single ply systems are becoming a popular alternative to traditional roof coverings.

Rubber EPDM

Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer is a permanently flexible single ply membrane with a life expectancy of at least 50 years. The system can be adhered to the roof using adhesive, mechanical attachment, or by using ballast (rounded stones). A 'one piece' cover of the roof is desirable, however there is a limit to the size any one sheet can be. Size and weight considerations and the shape of the roof can make it impossible to use one piece. Where EPDM joints are required an adhesive or jointing tape is used to create a strong watertight seal between the seams. Self adhesive EPDM is joined and sealed by using a Hot air gun to heat weld any joints.

PVC

Polyvinyl Chloride Thermoplastic membranes usually reinforced with polyester or glass mesh have become increasingly popular with the advance in technology. Resistant to weathering and UV, current systems have an expected life of 30 plus years. Hot air welded seams provide a homogeneous watertight seal as strong as the membrane itself. Systems can be installed fully adhered or mechanically fastened. Coming in a range of colours, PVC can enhance existing structural design.
